There are few things more iconic than the majestic Australian Heritage Brumby, inspiration for many famous poems by Banjo Patterson, children’s books, TV series and movies. LJE Brumby rescue was formed to train and re-home Snowy Mountains Brumbies and promote their value as good all-round horses.

We offer a unique opportunity for animal lovers to connect with once wild brumbies and learn about their unique behaviours, characteristics and instincts. Participants have a chance to discover what goes on behind the scenes of gentling and re-homing a wild horse. This is a ground-skills only experience (no riding). You will watch and learn some natural horsemanship and participate in training to desensitize the brumbies to human interaction to help prepare them for their forever home. No previous horse experience is required, we will teach you basic horsemanship, principles of pressure and release and positive reinforcement to gain the trust of these intelligent and beautiful horses. Our goal is to prepare our brumbies to safely lead, tie up, have their feet trimmed, load onto a trailer and happily approach you in their paddock. A trained and approachable animal is 100 times more likely to be adopted.

Training is tailored towards each participants’ ability and confidence as well as each Brumbies’ progress in training/gentling and participants are not required to have any previous horse experience. As with people, horses are individuals and handling and training needs to be mindful of that. Temperament, age or what happened to them in their previous life will affect how calm or challenging each one may be.

Time permitting, we can venture out for a leisurely walk with our more relaxed, resident Brumbies. Enjoy our significant views, explore forest trails or take the brumbies for a splash in Lake Jindabyne with plenty of photo opportunities.

Reviews

"A deeply moving and memorable experience for anyone but especially for horse lovers. Sally exudes kindness, patience and warmth, going out of her way to explain exactly what to do, how and why to ensure her beautiful brumbies are exceptionally well cared for. The location is breathtaking and the variety of other animals both pets, farm animals and rescued are all part of the special couple of hours. It was incredible to get so close and touch and connect with real Brumbies. We will definately be back - and maybe even to get to stay in one of the lovely chalets with breathtaking views."

"Definately the highlight of my weekend in the snowy mountains. Sally is very informative and caring. I loved learning about the individual personalities of her beautiful brumbies, and about the hard work, patience and commitment that goes into rehoming them. Sally's daughters are equally as friendly and their property is on such a picturesque location. There's plenty of wildlife around but best of all the brumbies! gosh they are beautiful creatures and it was such a magical experience being able to be up close to them, and the take them for a stroll down to the lake, which made for a stunning back drop in photos."

"We had a fantastic morning with Sally and her daughters visiting the brumbies. We never expected to have such an extraordinary up close experience with these incredible wild animals. An absolute highlight of our trip. Sally was an exceptional host and my daughter can't stop talking about all the amazing things she learnt. A truely unique experience to make lasting lifetime memories for your whole family!"

"This experience was beyond incredible! From the moment of arriving to the beautiful view, Sally was sweet, very approachable & friendly & ready to share as much knowledge to the help us feel as comfortable with the brumbies (Mojo & Yogi) as possible. It did help that Yogi came to introduce himself straight away with that bright personality of his I’m so grateful for this experience as it was truly amazing to get the chance to learn the methods required to have a brumbie trust you, definitely can’t wait to come back!"

"My daughter and I spent a wonderful afternoon at Sally’s farm at Kalkite. The farm is in an incredible setting beside Lake Jindabyne. Sally was patient and kind, and showed an immense love for her brumbies. We loved meeting Yogi and Mojo, and learning about the brumbies. We then got to walk them down to the lake at sunset, which was absolutely magical! Loved the experience!"

MORE ABOUT OUR TRAINING METHOD:

Using natural horsemanship, our goal is to desensitize our brumbies to human interaction to help prepare them for their forever home. We use basic principles of pressure and release and CAT (Constructional Approach Training) to gain the trust of these intelligent wild horses.

CAT is about letting the horse feel in control over the proximity of interaction so that it learns that it can control the things it fears (people) and starts to think and question is it real danger? We allow the horse to set the threshhold and at every step of our training we constantly look for a relaxed signal from the horse and try to stay within the horse's emotional space where the horse shows NO anxiety.

This method of training requires a lot of patience, empathy and respect for each horse as an individual, as it is essential to give them ample time to process. There can be a lot of waiting when nothing much seems to be “happening”, but internally there is a lot going on. As the horse learns it can control the things it fears, the chemical pathways in the brain start to change and the horse begins to like the thing it feared and will approach of its own choice.

KEY TRAINING TIPS:

* Trainer must always behave calmly and predictably

* Try to prevent accidental expressions of flight responses

* Reward only one behaviour at a time in response to a consistent cue

* Careful not to reinforce the wrong response

* Read the animal’s body language for problems & deliver a consequence in a timely manner

* Consolidate behaviours before going to the next level
